Dil Lou is a “fortress” built in the 1920-1930 era. They were designed to ward off bandits. Generally, it is the tallest building in the village.
This Dil Lou is surrounded by water from a reservoir (created 2002?). The water covers the other buildings of the village.

Great picture. Is the water there since the reservoir was created? I have never seen one of these towers surrounded by water. Cheers, Dan Seto, Chinese Canadian Roots TV. Thanks for viewing my YouTube Channel.

My grand pa was just talking about these. It made me look these up and read up on Taishanese culture and ethnographical works. He was very very serious about the bandits being a problem. My grand mother said there were heinous ‘bag men’ that would show up and bag away the women. All the men came to North America to work, like her dad and uncles, so there was a point when guns were sent back to protect the locals from bandits. I’m not sure what number generation I’d fall under. Great grand pa’s uncle was first, great grand pa, then grand ma, then my dad, now me… guess I’m 5th gen? Sending love from Canada :D!
